Apathy and Other Small Victories

Category: By Kyle

Author: Paul Neilan
Theme: Little man vs Douchebag world

This is an amazing book that is an easy read yet manages to totally captivate the reader. Neilan creates the characters to be very real people with very real behaviours. The obscurity of some traits that the characters have are bold and thus made realistic through the basic idea that everyone is their own individual.

The book follows the main characters as he gets off the bus in a new town. We soon learn that this is the norm for our protagonist and that he is trying to find a place to settle down. It is clear from the start that he is tryign to find the one place he won't flee from.

It is due to his constant moving that he is wholly incapable of remaining fiscally solvent, until one of his flings gets him a job at her insurance company securing him employment and her a satisfying obsession - him. Thus, our protagonist finds himself riding a rickety old bicycle to work while using a horribly stinky rain poncho from Goodwill to protect his clothing solely in order to pay for his dingy hole of an apartment.

A definite must read for those who like the world of Coupland. Nobody will be disappointed.

Ender's Game

Category: By Kyle

Author: Card, Orson, Scott
Theme: Science Fiction

Rarely in the literary world is a book capable of connecting with many agegroups as this one is.

In this book, Ender, a young boy struggles with the loss of his monitor, a device that transmits information back to the Earth Government in their search for the one who will destroy the enemy threat once and for all. These enemies are known as "buggers." However, after an altercation at school - Ender is selected to become a student at the famous Battle School up in space, and he will prove just how special he is.

This book is full of the passion of writing. Orson Scott Card wastes no detail in creating the most vivid picture ever for his readers. This book immediately grabs and holds attention from the start to finish. More imporatantly, it speaks to all ages of reader, thus allowing many young readers to bridge the gap between children's and adult literature.

This is an excellent gift for a sci-fi reader of any age and it wouldn't be surprising if it turned some non-readers into Ender-a-holics. Thank goodness for sequels!

Author: Douglas Coupland
Subtitle: FREAKING Hilarious!

It takes a true bibliophile to appreciate the type of fiction in this book. While many claim this book to be a waste of paper, it is most surely not. This book is dripping with wit, sarcasm, jokes, and extremely great writing.

The book follows one of our main characters, Ethan throughout his life working for a video game company in Vancouver, BC. Ethan has had the bad luck of being stuck in JPOD, a pod of cubicles where everyone is stuck simply because of their last names.

We follow Ethan through such events as his mother killing a biker, to him falling in love with the new girl at work and falling in with a Chinese mob boss.

This book is DEFINITELY worth reading.

Shelf Monkey

Author: Redekop, Corey
Subtitle: Totally AWESOME!

This is an amazing book to put it bluntly. Thomas Friesen searches to find himself and as a result ends up getting wrapped up in a most violent and bloody coup as his friends and coworkers attempt to regain control of the industry that is literature from the evil clutches of yet another talkshow host who thinks he is the moral compass of the world.

Although the first few pages aren't gripping, the book quickly becomes much more interesting and almost impossible to put down. Reading this on a plane was almost a burden as I was torn between sleeping or finishing the book. Needless to say I did both, however the book was finished long before the angry octogenarian behind me started kicking my hardly reclined seat as I drifted into slumber.

Rarely does one become as attached to a character as one will become to Thomas Friesen.

Welcome to TalkLit

Welcome to TalkLit, a collection (or what will one day be) of book reviews straight from the mouth of me, a bookseller at one of the many bookstores that exist in our vast, yet tiny world.

As soon as I finish a book, I will attempt to write and revise a review that is worth publishing in public. While book reviews are the main purpose of this blog, I may also use it for communicating my perspective on current issues and sharing some works of my own. Hey, it's my blog and I'll use it how I like!

Coming soon: a review!
